Turning Trips into Insightful Distance Statistics
How we calculate distance between your trips and use it across your profile statistics.
Travel distance in Lugara is our best estimate of how far your trips take you between places. We calculate distances using the Haversine formula, which measures the great-circle distance between two coordinate points.
Each segment comes from the coordinates of one trip and the next one in your timeline. When you add a trip, we only store city‑level coordinates, even if you used the precise location detection. These coordinates are typically near the city center of the chosen place, which is enough for distance calculations on a travel scale and for visualizations like your personal travel map.
Trips are linked in timeline order, based on each trip’s dates. If you skip movements, for example, returning to a home base or taking a side trip without adding it, the system will connect the last recorded point directly to the next one. We don’t infer missing locations or approximate routes.
Keeping distances realistic
To keep your distance-based statistics as accurate and meaningful as possible, add the key movements that define your journey, like returns to your home base, long layovers, or side trips. Even a few extra trips in your history help your totals reflect what really happened, so your stats stay realistic.
Right now, this distance powers several parts of your profile statistics, like the Distance Traveled card, the Circumnavigations card that shows how many times you have gone around Earth, and the distance view in your travel chart. Keeping your trips accurate also lays the groundwork for future distance-based updates we plan to add to your statistics and visualizations.
